Evolutionary Algorithm for Bin Packing Problem
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper we investigate the use of evolution strategy (ES) for the bin packing problem. We used (1, λ)-ES, where 10 children are generated from one parent by means of a simple genetic operators; the crossover is not applied. The best of the descendants becomes the new parent solution. A widely known ordering representation modified for the purposes of the grouping the objects was used in the algorithm. One of the term of the fitness function is the penalty. The researches shown a great usefulness of the evolution strategy for the bin packing problem. The results of the experiments confirmed once more the power of the evolutionary algorithms which consists in ability to generate very good solutions without going into the structure of the problem.

Extending Two-Dimensional Bin Packing Problem: Consideration of Priority for Items
In this paper a two-dimensional non-oriented guillotine bin packing problem is studied when items have different priorities. Our objective is to maximize the total profit which is total revenues minus costs of used bins and wasted area. A genetic algorithm is developed to solve this problem where a new coding scheme is introduced. To evaluate the performance of the proposed GA, first an upper b...
متن کاملAn Evolutionary Algorithm for Column Generation in Integer Programming: An Effective Approach for 2D Bin Packing
We consider the 3-stage two-dimensional bin packing problem, which occurs in real-world problems such as glass cutting. For it, we present a new integer linear programming formulation and a branch and price algorithm. Column generation is performed by applying either a greedy heuristic or an Evolutionary Algorithm (EA). Computational experiments show the benefits of the EA-based approach. The h...
متن کاملA Novel Evolutionary Approach for Two Dimensional Bin Packing
Packing problems arise in a wide variety of application areas. The basic problem is that of determining an efficient arrangement of different objects in a region without any overlap and with minimal wasted gap between shapes. This paper presents a novel evolutionary approach based on three new evolutionary operators for optimizing the arrangement of irregular shapes. In this approach, each chro...
متن کاملOn Solving the Oriented Two-Dimensional Bin Packing Problem under Free Guillotine Cutting: Exploiting the Power of Probabilistic Solution Construction
Two-dimensional bin packing problems are highly relevant combinatorial optimization problems. They find a large number of applications, for example, in the context of transportation or warehousing, and for the cutting of different materials such as glass, wood or metal. In this work we deal with the oriented two-dimensional bin packing problem under free guillotine cutting. In this specific pro...
متن کاملAnt Colony Optimisation and Local Search for Bin Packing and Cutting Stock Problems
The Bin Packing Problem and the Cutting Stock Problem are two related classes of NP-hard combinatorial optimisation problems. Exact solution methods can only be used for very small instances, so for real-world problems we have to rely on heuristic methods. In recent years, researchers have started to apply evolutionary approaches to these problems, including Genetic Algorithms and Evolutionary ...
